Matra Djet Project

A project like grown-ups

As part of my second year of BUT, I chose the reverse engineering of parts from Matra Djet as my project. More concretely, our client is a car enthusiast who has acquired a Matra Jet 6, a car from the 1960s, with which he competes on multiple circuits in Europe. During these races, the car is under constant stress and therefore requires a lot of repairs.
The goal of this project is therefore to listen to our client and respond to his requests. I immediately liked this project because the missions given are concrete and they serve a passionate person who needs our skills.

The different missions

Gear lever

This part has the function of fixing the ball joint serving the movements of the gear lever during gear changes and of guiding the transmission rod towards the rear of the car.

As said in the introduction the races happen at a very high intensity and it is therefore common for there to be breakage. The original speed stick has been broken and re-welded many times and it is therefore urgent to rebuild one.

The pieces you see on the left were made by project groups from different promotions. Our main mission was therefore to finalize the piece. You will find below the technical documentation associated with the machining of this part.

Hub carrier

The hub carrier allows the pivot connection of the rear wheels. The hub carriers formerly used on this car are made of aluminum and foundry. Being an important part it is better to change it before it breaks at 160 km/h.

In order to recreate the part in foundry with a more recent aluminum we scanned the part in order to produce a mold. After careful consideration, we understood that he was not forced to manufacture an identical part and above all that we did not have the skills for a process such as foundry.

We therefore took the initiative to measure on the three-dimensional machine all the surfaces and functional dimensions in order to create a viable CAD model that can be adapted to mass machining or modification of pre-existing parts.
